My name is Fernando Ribeiro and I live in Porto, Portugal. I'm an engineer, a researcher in sustainable energy systems. I'm 40 years old and regardless of the weather I cycle to work every day. Life has led me the end of a cycle and I've decided to fulfill a dream I've had for 20 years: to spend one year traveling by bicycle. I've chosen the world's largest mountain range, the Andes, in South America, as my destination. I'll start in Colombia and the mountain range continues through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. I have no route, no deadlines and no destination; perhaps I'll dedicate some time to volunteer projects along the way. I'll try cycling at altitude, on dirt roads, in remote areas that will allow me to see incredible landscapes.
Since I lived in Mozambique between 2014 and 2017, I decided to raise funds for Mozambikes, a social enterprise that manufactures bicycles locally and donates them to remote areas of Mozambique. Along the way I will photograph people who use bicycles daily to get around and work, to show how useful this simple yet incredible means of transportation is.
