Since October 2017, attacks by armed groups have been occurring in Cabo Delgado Province in northern Mozambique, resulting in burned villages, murdered resulting in burned villages, murdered people, and destroyed infrastructure. One of the effects of these attacks has been the spread of fear and an increase in the number of internally displaced people fleeing to more southern, urban areas such as Pemba City.
One of the points of highest concentration of displaced people has been the neighbourhood of Mahate, which already totals about 12,000 displaced people. Of these, 7202 are children (according to the latest data obtained by the Administrative Headquarters of the district in December 2020).
Taking into account that this population pressure is expected to increase with the arrival of more displaced people fleeing the conflict, Karibu Project is born with the mission to implement support measures to school structures, thus creating conditions for the integration of IDPs in Mahate's schools.
The project started in January 2021 and will run until December 2022. Among the various activities that will be implemented over these two years, Karibu foresees the creation of an Office in the Neighborhood Administrative Headquarters in order to meet the demands that displaced children face, such as lack of documentation, school supplies, and clothing.
However beyond these concerns, it is recurrent that many students from the neighbourhood give up on continuing their studies due to the fact that the closest secondary school to the neighbourhood is approximately 6 km away (12 km round trip). With the costs of entering school, their children's studies are not a priority for parents secondary school, the solution is the chapas (20MT round trip) or walking to their school.
With this project, we want to encourage the permanence and school progression of these children, believing that, with effort, we can make the school an environment of hope, where children feel encouraged to continue with their studies and idealize a better future.
