Um Pequeno Gesto ("UPG") is an ONG operating in Mozambique and has been active in the Manjangue Community (Chokwé District) in Gaza Province supporting 206 children and young people, some of them extremely vulnerable and infected with HIV/AIDS, aims to provide food support, academic support to ensure their school progress through daily study sessions, ongoing medical assistance and teaching on local issues such as HIV prevention, school dropout, pregnancy and early marriage, among others.
The children of the Santa Luisa de Marillac School, as well as the young people of Manjangue High School, have been presenting visible necessities and difficulties. Every day, they travel long distances on foot, for 1 to 2 hours to reach school, jeopardizing their good school performance and their health. Visibly tired, they are forced to wake up very early to be able to arrive without delays, not always being able to be punctual, eventually affecting their studies and the various activities and group dynamics.
This campaign aims to collect 9 bicycles for these children from 1st to 8th grade and aged between 13 and 16 years. This small gesture will not only help the children to improve their travel, their state of health, and to have a successful academic performance, but will also help in a greater availability to support in the daily tasks after school and their families, allowing them more time for their studies. Thus, we reduce the likelihood of school dropouts and early marriages.
