The Journey to the Classroom

Published:  October 13, 2026

For children growing up in some of Quelimane's most vulnerable communities, getting to school can be a journey in itself.

For the children of Icidua, Ivagalane and Inhangome, school is often separated from home by more than just a few kilometres. In these extremely poor and vulnerable communities, access is difficult and transport options are almost non-existent. Children walk to school along difficult routes and, in some places, rely on informal bridges to cross the waterways and paths that connect their communities to the outside world. For many families, there simply is no alternative.

It was in this reality that Pedala Quelimane provided 90 bicycles to students from these three communities. Working alongside Manuel de Araújo, President of the Municipal Council of Quelimane, Mozambikes saw first-hand the conditions these children face every day and how something as simple as a bicycle can make an important difference to their ability to reach the classroom.

The bicycles were made possible through partnership, including the support of the McHugh family. Their contribution may have started far from Quelimane, but its impact is now being felt on the roads and paths travelled by these students every day. What began as support became something tangible: a bicycle placed in the hands of a child who needed a way to get to school.

For these children, the bicycle is not a luxury and it is not simply a means of transport. It is a practical response to a very real barrier. It can make a difficult journey easier, reduce the burden of walking long distances and give a child a more reliable way of reaching school.

And perhaps most importantly, it gives these children something they should never have to lose because of where they were born: the opportunity to reach their classroom and continue their education.

That is what Pedala Quelimane is ultimately about. Not simply putting 90 bicycles on the road, but helping 90 children travel a little further towards the opportunities that education can create.

“The distance may be local. The people who make change possible can come from anywhere.”
